ORBIT AND OCULOPLASTY Canaliculoplasty:

Canaliculoplasty is a surgery that involves removing extra canalicular tissues and inserting a stent to repair the canaliculus without causing harm to the punctum.

Canaliculotomy is an ophthalmological surgical operation done by an oculoplastic surgeon on individuals who have disorders that impact the tear ducts' activities, such as obstruction, infection, structural concerns, and abnormal growths, among others.

Epiphora is characterised by severe tearing, and canaliculotomy is thought to be the best surgical therapy for it. In this disease, the mechanism for correctly draining the tear film is inadequate, resulting in tears overflowing rather than being channelled into the nasolacrimal system.

A canaliculotomy is a procedure for draining clogged tear ducts. Because this is an outpatient operation, the patient will not be needed to stay in the hospital for observation and confinement.

The patient can be put under general anaesthetic, which means he or she will be completely unconscious throughout the treatment and will not experience any discomfort or fear. The patient can also choose sedation, which means he or she would be awake but not experience discomfort during the treatment.

The surgeon will create an incision on the side of the nose to remove the bone in the centre of the tear sac and the nose during the treatment. The lining of the tear sac will subsequently be attached to the lining of the nose, allowing tears to drain.

Sutures will be used to seal the incisions, and the stitches will be removed a week following the treatment. Within surgery, the patient may see a raised scar in the region, which usually fades after a few months.

Disease Overview:

Canalicular obstruction

The return of clear fluid from the opposite punctum is a common symptom of canalicular blockage. The existence of total nasolacrimal duct (NLD) blockage is indicated by the return of the fluid along with some mucous via the other punctum.

Disease Signs and Symptoms:

Excessive moisture in the eyes, overflowing tears on the face, and somewhat obscured vision are all indications of canalicular blockage.

Disease Causes:

  • Canalicular blockage caused by an acquired condition:
  • Blepharitis, canaliculitis, infections (viral, bacterial, fungal), ocular cicatricial pemphigoid, Steven Jonson Syndrome, and ectropion are examples of inflammatory and infectious conditions.
  • Canalicular laceration, chemical burns, and thermal burns are all examples of traumatic injuries.

Disease Diagnosis:

The return of clear fluid from the opposite punctum is a common symptom of canalicular blockage. The existence of total nasolacrimal duct (NLD) blockage is indicated by the return of the fluid along with some mucous via the other punctum.

Disease Treatment:

Bincanalicular intubation is the preferred therapy for partial stenosis, however conservative surgery should be utilised if the stenosis occurs on the punctum or in the common canaliculus, or if the stenosis is restricted.
