REFRACTIVE SURGICAL PROCEDURE-Phakic IOL Toric

Phakic IOLs are transparent implantable lenses that are surgically inserted in front of or just below the iris (the coloured part of your eye) without removing your natural lens. Without corrective eyewear, phakic lenses let light to focus properly on the retina, resulting in clearer vision.

Because the normal lens of the eye is left unaltered, it is referred described as "phakic." Pseudophakic intraocular lenses are those that are placed into eyes after the native lens has been removed during cataract surgery.

Toric IOLs contain specific marks on the periphery of the lens that allow the surgeon to see how the astigmatism correction in the lens is oriented. The surgeon rotates the toric IOL after it is placed in the eye to ensure that the astigmatism correction is properly positioned for the optimum outcomes.

Disease Overview:

Astigmatism and cataract

Cataracts and astigmatism are two distinct conditions. The clouding of the normal human lens, which generally occurs beyond the age of 60, is known as a cataract. Astigmatism is an abnormality of the cornea's form that usually appears in the teen years or early twenties.

Disease Signs and Symptoms:

  • Blurred or distorted vision.
  • Eyestrain or discomfort.
  • Headaches.
  • Difficulty with night vision.
  • Squinting.

Disease Causes:

Although the exact aetiology of astigmatism is unknown, heredity plays a significant role. It's common from birth, although it can also develop later in life. It can also happen as a result of an eye injury or following eye surgery. Nearsightedness or farsightedness are common causes of astigmatism.

Disease Diagnosis:

An eye exam is used to determine if you have astigmatism. A comprehensive eye exam includes a battery of eye tests as well as a refraction, which evaluates how the eyes bend light. Your eye doctor may use a variety of tools, shine strong lights into your eyes, and ask you to look through a variety of lenses.

Disease Treatment:

The cataract lens is replaced with a specific intraocular lens (IOL) called a toric IOL to correct astigmatism that is more severe. Astigmatism, nearsightedness, and farsightedness are all corrected with these lenses.
