Tricuspid Valve Replacement:

Traditional open-heart surgery and chest bone opening are used to repair the tricuspid valve (sternotomy). After the treatment, the bone is wired back together to limit mobility and help in healing.

Repairs to the tricuspid valve might include a variety of techniques, including:

  • Tissue is inserted into the flaps (perforated leaflets) that seal off the valve to repair holes or rips.
  • Adding support to the valve's base or roots
  • Valve leaflets that have been fused together must be separated.
  • Tissue is reshaped or removed to allow the valve to seal more firmly.
  • Using an artificial ring to tighten or reinforce the ring around a valve (annulus) (annuloplasty)

The cone method is a modern kind of tricuspid valve surgery. In persons with Ebstein anomaly, the operation is used to fix leaking tricuspid valves. Surgeons detach the flaps (leaflets) that seal off the tricuspid valve from the underlying heart muscle during this treatment. The leaflets are rotated and reattached to form a leaflet cone, which is a circle of leaflet tissue.

Disease Treatment:

The origin and degree of tricuspid valve regurgitation determine the course of treatment. The treatment's objectives are to:

  • Reduce the appearance of signs and symptoms
  • Preventing problems is essential.
  • Enhance your quality of life

You may not require regular follow-ups if you have minor tricuspid valve regurgitation. If you have more severe regurgitation, you may need to see a doctor on a frequent basis to have your condition monitored.

If you have tricuspid valve disease as a result of an underlying disorder or congenital heart defect, you may require drugs, a catheter treatment, or surgery to repair or replace the valve.

Surgical or non-surgical techniques

Surgical repair or replacement of the tricuspid valve may be required in some cases of tricuspid valve regurgitation. Valve replacement or repair can be performed as open-heart surgery or as a less invasive procedure. A catheter-based treatment may be used to correct a tricuspid valve issue in some cases.

If you have significant tricuspid valve regurgitation with signs or symptoms, your doctor may prescribe tricuspid valve repair or replacement surgery.

With or without indications and symptoms, you have heart swelling (enlargement).

You have tricuspid valve regurgitation and require cardiac surgery to treat another problem, such as mitral valve disease.

The following surgeries or other treatments can be used to address tricuspid valve regurgitation:

Repair of the tricuspid valve. Open-heart surgery is generally used to repair the tricuspid valve. Patching holes or rips in the valve, altering or removing tissue to assist the valve shut more firmly, detaching valve flaps (leaflets), and providing support to the valve base or roots are all possibilities for repair.

Replacement of the tricuspid valve. If the damaged or diseased tricuspid valve cannot be repaired, the surgeon may replace it with a mechanical valve or a valve manufactured from cow, pig, or human heart tissue (biological tissue valve).

The process entails using a catheter. A catheter method may be used instead of open-heart surgery to replace a biological tissue tricuspid valve that is no longer functional. Using X-rays as a guide, the doctor inserts a thin, hollow tube (catheter) into a vein and directs it to the tricuspid valve. The replacement valve is inserted into the biological valve through the catheter.

Other techniques are available. If tricuspid valve regurgitation is producing abnormal heartbeats (arrhythmias), catheter ablation or the maze procedure, a kind of open-heart surgery, may be used to block erroneous cardiac impulses that cause them.
