BIOGRAPHY

Since 2009, Dr. Anita Asgar has been an interventional cardiologist at the Montreal Institute of Cardiology. Dr. Asgar, a native of Newfoundland, finished Memorial University's medical programme and internal medicine residency there (1995-2002). In 2002, she relocated to Dalhousie to continue her training in cardiology. She completed a two-year fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at the Institut de Cardiologie de Montréal before crossing the Atlantic to London, England, where she worked on fellowships in Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Structural and Congenital Intervention at the Royal Brompton Hospital. She was just recognised by the CRT in February 2010 as one of the Young Leaders in Interventional Cardiology. She also works full-time as a staff cardiologist at the Institut de Cardiologie de Montreal and serves as the clinic's director for transcatheter valve therapy. She performs multiple congenital interventions in addition to approximately 70 transcatheter aortic valve replacements each year as an active participant in the structural heart intervention programme. She is the top doctor in Canada for this treatment and just started the first transcatheter mitral valve leaflet repair programme in Quebec in December 2010. Her research interests include cost-effectiveness analyses and the treatment and management of valvular heart disease.
