BIOGRAPHY

Awardee of the Padma Bhushan Dr. Kewal Kishan Talwar is a well-known cardiologist and the former head of India's Medical Council. He was the previous director of the cardiology department of AIIMS in New Delhi and the Director of the Chandigarh-based Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER). He was Chairman Cardiology Department at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket for 6+ years before joining PSRI Hospital. In 1997, he was listed in the LIMCA Book of World Records for performing the first implantation of implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) treatment in South Asia. He is also recognised in the LIMCA Book of World Records for introducing Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy to India. He has received several awards, including the Dr. B. C. Roy Award, which is India's highest medical honour. He is a fellow of the Indian National Science Academy and a past president of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) (INSA). In 2006, the Indian government honoured him with the Padma Bhushan, the country's third highest civilian honour, for his services to medicine. His work on cardiac arrhythmia aided in the development of cardiac arrhythmia as a specialty in India, as well as the development of a heart failure and heart transplant programme at AIIMS. Several papers, including 240 articles and 270 abstracts, have been published in peer-reviewed medical journals to chronicle his work. He's also written 15 chapters for medical textbooks.
