Dr. K.H. Sancheti

The Sancheti Institute for Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation was established in 1965 by Dr. K.H. Sancheti, a pioneer in the field of orthopaedics. Dr. Sancheti, or KHS as he is affectionately known, has long advocated for accessible orthopaedic prosthetics for the general public. He is recognised with developing INDUS, the nation's first indigenous knee and hip transplant prosthesis. The Government of India awarded him the Padmashree in 1991, the Padmabhushan in 2003, and the Padmavibhushan in 2012 for his remarkable services in orthopaedic rehabilitation, medical education, and research. These awards are the nation's highest civilian honours. The Medical Council of India also gave him the BC Roy Award. Dr. Sancheti has held a number of prestigious roles in medical and academic institutions in addition to serving as the Honorary Orthopaedic Surgeon to His Excellency, the Governor of Maharashtra and the Indian Armed Forces. More than 200 orthosurgeons have been taught by Dr. Sancheti over the years, and he has also provided his expertise to a number of hospitals across India, particularly in the area of facility design. Dr. Sancheti is the firm foundation on which Sancheti Hospital sits and continues to inspire and train a number of orthosurgeons.
