BIOGRAPHY
Gerald Batist is the director of the McGill Centre for Translational Research in Cancer and the former chair of the department of oncology at McGill University. The Segal Cancer Centre at the Jewish General Hospital, which he also oversees, expanded after receiving a significant grant from the Canadian Fund for Innovation.
Despite attending college in New York City, Dr. Gerald Batist returned to Montreal to attend McGill University for medical school. Post-doctoral training then took place in New York, Boston, and eventually at the National Cancer Institute in Washington. He received his training in molecular pharmacology and medical oncology there.
Dr. Batist is a clinician-scientist with molecular pharmacology and medical oncology training. His research in both the clinic and in the lab focuses on treatment resistance. This includes sizable consortiums that conduct extensive biopsy-based clinical trials to find brand-new medication resistance mechanisms. He co-directed a successful application in 2014 that led to the creation of Exactis Innovations, the Canadian National Centre of Excellence in Personalized Medicine. The main component is a project dubbed ""Personalize My Treatment"" that aims to create a sizable biobank and database linked to a prospective longitudinal registry of cancer patients followed throughout the course of their illness. Dr. Batist was named a Knight of the National Order of Quebec and a Member of the Order of Canada in 2016.
