CORNEAL AND OCULAR SURFACE PROCEDURES - Corneal foreign body removal:
A corneal foreign body is an object (such as metal, glass, wood, plastic, or sand) that is either superficially adhering to or implanted in the eye's cornea (see the image below). A corneal foreign body removal operation is usually performed in a clinic or emergency room environment. If foreign bodies in the cornea are not removed promptly, they can cause long-term pain and problems such as infection and ocular necrosis. If the object is stuck on an eyelid, use water or eye drops to gently wash it out. If that doesn't work, try removing the thing with a second cotton-tipped swab. Try gently cleansing the eye with water or eye drops if the object is on the white of the eye.
