Septoplasty:

Septoplasty is a surgical technique that involves straightening the bone and cartilage that divides your two nostrils (septum). A deviated septum occurs when the septum is crooked.

Septoplasty, also known as submucous septal excision and septal reconstruction, is a surgical treatment that straightens a deviated nasal septum, which serves as a barrier between the two nasal cavities. The septum should, in theory, run along the centre of the nose.

Deviated septum

The thin wall between the nasal passages known as the nasal septum gets displaced to one side, resulting in a deviated septum. The nasal septum is frequently misplaced or deviated, causing one nasal channel to be narrower than the other. A significant deviated septum can obstruct one side of your nose and decrease airflow, making breathing difficult.

Nasal obstruction can be caused by a number of factors, including a deviated nasal septum or enlargement of the tissues that lining the nose.

Signs and Symptoms:

In most situations, there are no obvious evidence of a deviated septum. Most of the time, you may not even be aware that you have a deviated septum. The following are the most common signs and symptoms:

• During sleep, there is a lot of noise
• The nose bleeds
• One or both nostrils are obstructed, causing facial discomfort
• The desire to sleep on one particular side
• Awareness of the nasal cycle
• Sinus infections that recur

Disease Cause:

A deviated septum is a birth abnormality that can arise during foetal development or as a result of an injury sustained after childbirth in many circumstances. An injury that has shifted your nasal septum after birth might produce a deviated septum.

- The most prevalent risk factor is not wearing a seat belt when travelling in a car.

- Participating in contact sports

Diagnosis:

A nasal speculum is used to inspect your nostrils to see if you have a deviated septum. The doctor examines the position of the septum and how it affects nostril size. Sleep, snoring, sinus difficulties, and trouble breathing will all be discussed with the doctor.

Disease Treatment:

The initial treatment aims for a deviated septum are to address the symptoms of the tissues lining the nose, which can lead to nasal blockage and stuffiness. Your doctor may prescribe the following: 

- Decongestants (decongestants)

- Antihistamines (antihistamines)

If the indications and symptoms of a deviated septum continue, your doctor may suggest a surgical surgery called a septoplasty, which is sometimes combined with nose contouring.
