ASD Closure

A hole in the wall (septum) between your heart's two upper chambers is known as an atrial septal defect (ASD) (atria). The condition is present from the moment you are born (congenital).

Small flaws may be discovered by accident and never cause an issue. During infancy or early youth, some minor atrial septal abnormalities close.

The hole boosts the volume of blood flowing into the lungs. An atrial septal defect that is significant and has been present for a long time might harm your heart and lungs. To avoid difficulties, surgery or device closure may be required to treat atrial septal abnormalities.

Disease Overview:

Sinus atrial defects

SVASD (sinus venosus atrial septal defect) is a rare adult congenital heart defect that allows blood to be shunted from the systemic to the pulmonary circulation and is frequently linked with abnormal pulmonary venous return.

Disease Signs and Symptoms:

Atrial septal defect signs and symptoms can include:

  • Shortness of breath, especially when exercising.
  • Fatigue.
  • Swelling of legs, feet or abdomen.
  • Heart palpitations or skipped beats.
  • Stroke.
  • Heart murmur, a whooshing sound that can be heard through a stethoscope.

Disease Cause:

A deficit of the common wall between the superior vena cava (SVC) and the right-sided pulmonary veins causes an interatrial communication, which is the most frequent abnormality.

Diagnosis:

Because of its posterior (far field) position, transthoracic echocardiography underdiagnoses sinus venosus atrial septal defect (SVD). Given the closeness of the transducer to the lesion, transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) should be optimal for diagnosing SVD.

Disease Treatment:

The majority of treatment is surgical correction. The correction of a sinus venosus atrial septal defect is more difficult than a secundum atrial septal defect. Blood flow from the right superior pulmonary vein is redirected into the left atrium using a patch (synthetic material or pericardium).
