Procedure Description:

Multiple Sclerosis Treatment:

Multiple sclerosis (MS) treatment aims to halt disease progression and prevent the development or worsening of disabilities. New neurologic symptoms ("relapses") or progressive disability suggest that the disease is still active. Furthermore, the existence of new lesions on brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be used to predict disease activity even in the absence of new symptoms, which has implications for treatment modification. Medications for MS largely target the adaptive immune system. When deciding which treatment to take, it is critical to examine the severity of disease activity, the side effects and risk profile of certain medicines, and patient preferences.

Disease Overview:

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disorder affecting the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system). MS causes your immune system to wrongly target myelin cells. These are the protective sheaths that wrap the brain and spinal cord nerves. Myelin sheath damage disrupts the messages (signals) that your nerves convey throughout your body to execute activities such as vision, feeling, and movement.

Disease Signs and Symptoms:

Early indicators of MS include:

1- vision changes, such as optic neuritis, double vision, or vision loss.

2- Muscle weakness (typically occurs on one side of the face or body, or below the waist).

3- Numbness or unusual feelings (typically on one side of the face or body, or below the waist).

Are there any other symptoms of multiple sclerosis?

Common MS symptoms include fatigue.

2. Clumsiness.

3. Dizziness.

4. Difficulty with bladder regulation

5. Loss of balance and coordination.

6- Difficulty with cognitive functions.

7- The mood changes.

8. Muscle stiffness and spasms (tremors).

These symptoms differ from person to person and can change in severity from one day to the next. You may have a couple of these symptoms, but they are unlikely to occur all at once.

Disease Causes:

Multiple sclerosis is caused by demyelination, which is the loss of myelin. Myelin is a protective covering (sheath) that surrounds nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It transmits messages (signals) between your brain and the rest of your body, controlling functions such as vision, sensation, and movement.

The purpose of your immune system is to protect your body from potentially harmful substances such as germs or viruses. With MS, your immune system becomes overactive, mistaking healthy myelin (and, in some cases, the nerve cells beneath the myelin) for a threat to your body. Your immune system's attack on healthy myelin harms it. This is called demyelination.

An imaging examination (MRI) can reveal evidence of myelin damage. They may call it a scar, lesion, or plaque. Messages cannot easily flow between nerve cells where myelin is damaged, resulting in the development of MS symptoms.

Experts are unsure why certain people get MS. According to research, the following factors may increase the likelihood of acquiring MS:

1- Smoking.

2- Toxic exposure, such as secondhand smoking and pesticides.

3- Low amounts of vitamin D.

4- Virus exposure (Epstein-Barr or mononucleosis).

5. Childhood obesity.

6- Genetic predisposition (someone in your biological family has the ailment or possesses genes that make you more likely to get the disease).

Disease Diagnosis:

There is no one diagnostic test available to identify the illness. A provider will diagnose MS following a physical exam, neurological exam, and testing. During an exam, your doctor will learn about your symptoms and medical history. Blood tests, MRI scans of your brain and spinal cord, and spinal fluid studies are all possible tests.

Diagnostic testing allows your doctor to rule out illnesses that cause symptoms similar to MS. It may include:

1- Blood and urine tests.

2- An MRI test.

3- The optical coherence tomography (OCT) test.

4- A lumbar puncture.

5- Evoked potential (EP) test.
