BIOGRAPHY

Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto is Dr. Gelareh Zadeh. She works for the University Health Network's Toronto Western Hospital as a neurosurgeon-scientist. Most recently, the Wilkins Family Chair in Brain Tumor Research was given to her. Her clinical practise is focused on Skull Base Neuro-oncology, and she has established and is actively involved in numerous multidisciplinary clinics, including the skull base, pituitary, brain metastases, gamma knife, and neurofibromatosis clinics. She also has a dedicated general brain tumour clinic. She is committed to and actively participating in the effort to advance surgical clinical trials. Her lab's primary areas of study include the molecular mechanisms underlying glioma angiogenesis and the metabolic regulators of tumours. examining in particular how cells from the bone marrow help gliomas' tumour vasculature and how differentiation into the macrophage and microglia populations contributes to avoiding anti-angiogenic therapy. The laboratory's second area of study, tumour metabolism, looks at how altered metabolism in response to anti-angiogenic therapy interacts with one another. She also has a translational study that is focused on mapping the menignomas and schwannomas' genomic landscape. Peer-reviewed funding from several organisations, including the CIHR, Terry Fox New Investigator grant, CCSRI, CRS, Brain Child, and others, are used to fund her lab.
