BIOGRAPHY

Guy Rouleau, MD, is the Director of The Neuro (Montreal Neurological Institute-Hospital), the Chair of the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery at McGill University, the Director of the Department of Neuroscience at the McGill University Health Centre, a co-founder of the Tanenbaum Open Science Institute, and a renowned James McGill Professor. Dr. Rouleau is a clinician-scientist who treats patients with genetic disorders of the brain and other diseases. He concentrates his research on figuring out the underlying causes of these problems in order to develop novel treatments. Throughout the course of his more than 30 years of actively conducting research, he has produced approximately 850 articles in peer-reviewed journals, which have been cited more than 74,000 times (Google Scholar). Identifying dozens of disease-causing genes and discovering novel mutational pathways are only a couple of Dr. Rouleau's ground-breaking accomplishments. His identification of the genes responsible for neurological and psychiatric conditions such as autism, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, hereditary neuropathies, epilepsy, and schizophrenia has improved our understanding of the molecular processes underlying the manifestation of these conditions' symptoms.

RESEARCH PAPERS AND PUBLICATIONS (3)

  • Dr. Rouleau's research during the last two decades has mostly focused on the study of illnesses of the nervous system and brain. His research team used this period to pinpoint twelve illness-causing genes, aid in the location of twelve more genes, and advance knowledge of the molecular processes behind disease manifestations. Two areas comprise Dr. Rouleau's research endeavors: determining the genes responsible for disorders affecting the brain and nervous system and investigating the molecular pathogenic mechanisms.
  • According to Google Scholar, Dr. Rouleau has over 900 publications in peer-reviewed journals and has received over 80,000 citations. He has won multiple honors for his services to science and society and has mentored over a hundred students at the master's, doctoral, and post-doctoral levels.
  • A number of neurological and psychiatric conditions, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy, familial aneurysms, cavernous angiomas, epilepsy, spinocerebellar ataxias, spastic paraplegia, autism, Tourette syndrome, restless leg syndrome, and schizophrenia are the focus of Dr. Rouleau's research.
