Dr. Praveen Varma

Dr. Praveen Varma graduated from Calicut Medical College in Kerala with an MBBS in 1992 and an MS in General Surgery in 1996. In the year 2000, he received his MCh from the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology in Trivandrum. He thereafter became a Lecturer in Cardiac Surgery at the Medical College of Trivandrum. Until 2005, he was an Assistant Professor at Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology in Trivandrum. He then became a Resident in Cardio Thoracic Surgery at Boston Medical Center, where he also served as Chief Resident until 2008. At BMC, he obtained more experience in CABGs, Mitral Valve Repair, and Aortic Root Surgery. He spent two years as a senior clinical fellow at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School. He got experience at Brigham in Minimally Invasive Mitral Valve Repair and AVR, difficult reoperation operations, Heart Failure surgeries such as Transplantation, and Ventricular Assist Device implantation. The senior staff selection committee nominated him as Additional Professor at Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology in Trivandrum. He is a Professor and Head of the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Center in Kochi. His research focuses on beating heart CABG, Ischemic Mitral Regurgitation correction, Mitral valve and Tricuspid valve repair, prolonged septal myectomy for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, surgery for infective endocarditis, and heart transplantation. He has taken an active role in resident education. He also serves on the Editorial Board of Annals of Cardiac Anesthesia and is a reviewer for several journals. He has around 50 journal publications to his credit.
