Dr. Sanjay Bhat

In 1991, he received the best all-round graduate and B.S Sen gold medals for his MBBS and MS from JIPMER, Pondicherry. He received his M.Ch in Urology from the famed Christian Medical College in Vellore, where his father, the legendary Dr. H.S Bhat, had founded the first postgraduate programme in Urology in India (popularly known as the father of Indian Urology). In 2000, he established the Department of Urology at The Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences in Kochi, Kerala, which is now regarded as one of the best in the country. He was a professor and the director of urology before joining Sunrise Hospital in November 2009. He left the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences in May 2014 to become the Head of the Department of Urology and Renal Transplant at the Rajagiri Hospital in Kerala in October 2014. He is a pioneer and well-known practitioner of advanced urological laparoscopy, Endourology, Paediatric urology, and reconstructive urology. He is credited with doing the most laparoscopic adrenalectomies in India, as well as one of the most laparoscopic live related kidney retrievals for transplant and laparoscopic radical prostatectomy. He is credited with the first laparoscopic right-sided kidney retrieval in India, as well as the first laparoscopic partial nephrectomy for tumours. He is one of only a few surgeons in the UAE who does laparoscopic radical prostatectomy and partial nephrectomy. His other specialties and areas of competence include urethral repair in hypospadias and following trauma, upper tract Endourology (PCNL, RIRS), Uro-oncology, and Paediatric Urology.
