Profile (Overview)

Rome, Italy's Gemelli University Hospital is a sizable general hospital. It is the largest hospital in Rome, the second-largest hospital in Italy, and one of the biggest private hospitals in Europe, with 1575 beds. It has the name of Agostino Gemelli, a physician and psychologist who was a Franciscan friar and the university's founder. It is the teaching hospital for the University Cattolica del Sacro Cuore's medical school. The hospital offers both paid private treatment in specially designed hotel-style wards and free medical support as part of the Italian national health system.
Since 2015, the hospital has housed one of the biggest and most modern hybrid operating rooms in Europe, the highly specialized NEMO Clinical Center, which specializes in treating patients with neuromuscular diseases such as muscular dystrophies, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), which is unique in Italy. The Interactive Patient Simulation Experience (IPSE Center), a 1,200 square meter facility devoted to medical, surgical, and diagnostic simulation, was opened not too long ago.
