BIOGRAPHY

Joanne Bargman is a professor of medicine at the University of Toronto and a staff nephrologist at the University Health Network. She graduated from the University of Toronto with a medical degree. She spent her final year of medical school as an exchange fellow in Melbourne before attending Stanford University to complete her nephrology training. Her studies were concentrated on micropuncture and renal physiology. When she eventually made it back to Toronto, she was hired by the Toronto Western Hospital, where Dimitrios Oreopoulos educated her in peritoneal dialysis. On topics as varied as peritoneal dialysis, glomerulonephritis, and the therapy of systemic lupus erythematosus, she has given more than 700 invited lectures across the globe. She serves as the International Society of Peritoneal Dialysis's 2012–2014 President, co-director of the University Health Network's combined renal-rheumatology lupus clinic, and director of peritoneal dialysis for the University Health Network in Toronto. She has been awarded the ""Silver Shovel,"" which is granted by the University of Toronto's graduating medical class to the finest lecturer throughout the undergraduate years. Also, she received the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine's Postgraduate Teaching Award, which is granted to the program's top instructor. She was selected to serve as the University of Colorado at Denver's 12th Robert Collins Visiting Lecturer in Dialysis. Both the Canadian Society of Nephrology's award for outstanding teaching and the Donald Seldin Award for excellence in nephrology from the National Kidney Foundation (US) were given to her in 2013.
