BIOGRAPHY

After earning a Bachelor of Science in Premedical Studies from Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama, Prof. A. Vathsala went on to study medicine at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee. She got membership in the Royal College of Physicians after completing her internal medicine studies in Singapore (United Kingdom). She got training in transplantation at the Cornell University School of Medicine in the United States and training in renal medicine at the Singapore General Hospital after being awarded a Health Manpower Development Program scholarship. She is a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine and the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (Singapore). Prof. Vathsala has spent her entire professional life working to advance clinical renal transplantation since completing her transplant training. She has been an ardent supporter of kidney transplantation as the preferred treatment for individuals with renal failure and a fierce opponent of the commercialization of organ donation. She oversaw the management of the first pancreas kidney transplant at NUH and Singapore in 2012, as well as the first spousal kidney transplant in 1991, cross-match positive deceased donor kidney transplants since 2007, and the rare blood group incompatible and cross-match positive kidney transplant performed at NUH in 2009. The results of renal transplantation in Singapore are some of the best in the world because to her leadership. These outstanding outcomes have led to recognition of both her as a person and the transplant programme she oversees as a centre of excellence for clinical excellence, quality of care, education, and research.
