Profile (Overview)
Since 1934, patients from different religious and cultural origins in Montreal, all of Quebec, and beyond have received cutting-edge care and compassion from the Jewish General Hospital (JGH). This 637-bed teaching hospital for McGill University admits more than 23,000 patients annually, manages at least 300,000 outpatient visits, 67,000 emergency visits, and more than 4,000 births. It is one of the largest and busiest acute-care hospitals in the province. The Jewish General Hospital treats and cares for a wide range of people from all backgrounds, even though it continues to serve Montreal's Jewish community. These patients mostly hail from Montreal's surrounding areas and the hospital's close neighbourhood. However, a sizable number of patients are also referred from throughout Quebec and other Canadian provinces due to the JGH's status as a referral Centre in specialties including neonatology and cancer. A little more than half of the hospitalized patients are from the area around the hospital, 30% are from other parts of Montreal, and 20% are from overseas.

With 637 beds, Jewish General Hospital is one of the largest hospital sites in Canada and is associated with McGill University. The hospital has 645 attending physicians in addition to more than 40 medical and surgical specialties; the majority of these physicians are McGill teaching appointments. Sixty-six medical residents rotate through the JGH in addition to the 188 medical residents who are based there. Gerald Batist is the director of the McGill Centre for Translational Research in Cancer and the former chair of the department of oncology at McGill University. The Segal Cancer Centre at the Jewish General Hospital, which he also oversees, expanded after receiving a significant grant from the Canadian Fund for Innovation. Despite attending college in New York City, Dr. Gerald Batist returned to Montreal to attend McGill University for medical school. Post-doctoral training then took place in New York, Boston, and eventually at the National Cancer Institute in Washington. He received his training in molecular pharmacology and medical oncology there. Dr. Batist is a clinician-scientist with molecular pharmacology and medical oncology training. His research in both the clinic and in the lab focuses on treatment resistance. This includes sizable consortiums that conduct extensive biopsy-based clinical trials to find brand-new medication resistance mechanisms. He co-directed a successful application in 2014 that led to the creation of Exactis Innovations, the Canadian National Centre of Excellence in Personalized Medicine. The main component is a project dubbed ""Personalize My Treatment"" that aims to create a sizable biobank and database linked to a prospective longitudinal registry of cancer patients followed throughout the course of their illness. Since 2010, he has served as the division's chief at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal, Canada. Research on robotics and prostate cancer is a focus for Dr. Anidjar. He was brought in from France in 2000 to assist launch the laparoscopic programme at McGill. He participated in a team that performed the first-ever laparoscopic radical prostatectomy in Quebec that year at the Jewish General. Via small keyholes and with the aid of a tiny camera, the surgeon will remove a malignant prostate. At the Jewish General, Dr. Anidjar and his coworkers invented the laparoscopic nephrectomy procedure for the removal of malignant kidneys. Laparoscopic surgery offers patients a host of advantages, including a much reduced chance of bleeding, less discomfort, and quicker recovery times. He is currently in charge of the Urology Robotics Program. The Jewish General Hospital's Associate Physician-in-Chief of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Nephrology is Dr. Mark L. Lipman. He is a project director at the Lady Davis Center for Medical Research and an associate professor in the McGill University School of Medicine.
