Bipolar Hemiarthroplasty:

The head of a broken femur is replaced with an implant designed to support the femur and restore hip function in this surgical operation. Unlike a total hip replacement, which replaces both the ball of the femur and the hip socket, this treatment simply replaces the ball.

Bipolar Hemiarthroplasty:

The head of a broken femur is replaced with an implant designed to support the femur and restore hip function in this surgical operation. Unlike a total hip replacement, which replaces both the ball of the femur and the hip socket, this treatment simply replaces the ball.

Disease Overview:

Displaced femoral neck fractures

Femoral neck and peritrochanteric fractures are equally common, accounting for more than 90% of proximal femur fractures.

The most common place for a hip fracture is the femoral neck. Where your upper leg joins your pelvis, your hip is a ball and socket joint. The femoral head is located at the top of your femur (thigh bone). The "ball" that sits in the socket is this. The femoral neck is located just below the femoral head.

Intracapsular fractures of the femoral neck are the most common kind. The fluid that lubricates and nourishes the hip joint is contained in the capsule. Fractures in this region are classified according to where they occur along the femoral neck:

The femoral head and neck juncture is known as subcapital.

The midpoint of the femoral neck is known as transcervical.

The base of the femoral neck is known as the basicervical.

Though anybody can break their femoral neck, it is far more likely in older people with little bone density. More than 90% of these fractures occur in adults over the age of 50, according to reliable sources. Women are more likely to have them.

A femoral neck fracture can rupture blood vessels and cut off the femoral head's blood supply. If the femoral head's blood supply is cut off, the bone tissue dies (a process known as avascular necrosis), leading to the bone's eventual collapse. Fractures that develop in areas with a good blood supply have a greater chance of healing.

As a result, the position of the break and the quality of the blood supply will determine the therapy for an older patient with displaced femoral fractures.

Replacement of the femoral head is the standard of therapy for a displaced fracture with a disturbed blood supply (hemiarthroplasty or a total hip arthroplasty). If there is no displacement, the fracture may be surgically stabilised with screws or other hardware. There is still a chance that the blood supply will be disturbed.

Disaese Signs and Symptoms:

The most frequent sign of a femoral neck fracture is groyne discomfort that grows worse as you try to move your hip or put weight on it. You may suffer groyne discomfort prior to the fracture if your bone is compromised by osteoporosis, cancer, or another medical condition.

Your leg may seem shorter than your undamaged leg, or your leg may be externally rotated, with your foot and knee twisted outward, if you have a femoral neck fracture.

  • Radiating pain to the knee is one of the signs of a femoral neck fracture.
  • Inability to support one's own weight.
  • The injured limb shortens or rotates sideways.
  • Pain in the hip increases as the leg is rotated.
  • On the side of the hip, there is swelling.

Disease Causes:

The most prevalent cause of femoral neck fractures is trauma. A fracture in the femoral neck is more likely if you're over 50 or have a medical condition that weakens your bones, such as osteoporosis. Bone cancer is another risk factor.

Femoral neck fractures in elderly persons are most commonly caused by falls. These fractures most commonly occur in younger people as a consequence of high-energy trauma, such as a car accident or a fall from a considerable height.

In youngsters, femoral neck fractures are uncommon. They can be caused by low bone mineral density, such as osteopenia or osteoporosis, or by other disorders including cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy, in addition to high-energy trauma.

Disease Diagnosis:

To diagnose a femoral neck fracture, your doctor will request an X-ray. Other imaging procedures, including as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computer tomography (CT) scans, may be used by your doctor to acquire further information.

Your leg will almost certainly be X-rayed by your doctor. They will also do an MRI if they detect a stress fracture (magnetic resonance imaging). An MRI is the only way to see most stress fractures. Your doctor would most likely advise you to keep your weight off the leg and use crutches.

Disease Treatment:

Whether you can put weight on your reconstructed hip depends on a number of things. Before beginning any therapy or activity, consult with your surgeon. Your discomfort should get better as your bones recover.

If you develop osteonecrosis, you may need hip replacement surgery in the future.

Hip Replacement, Partial or Complete

The bones of the ball-and-socket joint are removed and replaced with metal or ceramic implants in hemiarthroplasty (partial hip replacement) or complete arthroplasty. Because of the difficulties and healing rates associated with surgical treatment of these sorts of fractures, hip replacement may be preferred if you've suffered a displaced fracture.

In younger patients, however, surgeons will try to prevent a partial hip replacement if at all feasible. Hip replacements function well for people who are less active, but they wear out faster in younger, more energetic patients. Other surgical methods appear to function better in these patients, according to some evidence.

Following a partial or total hip replacement, rehabilitation usually begins right away. As their discomfort improves, many patients can quickly graduate to walking with their entire weight on the implant.
