North York General Hospital | Toronto , Canada

Profile (Overview)

In Toronto, Ontario, Canada, North York General Hospital (NYGH) serves as a teaching facility. It provides acute care, ambulatory and long-term services over a number of locations, primarily servicing the North York district as well as southern York Region. It is one of Canada's leading community academic hospitals and is linked with the University of Toronto. One of the three hospitals that make up the Peters-Boyd Academy of the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine is New York General Hospital (NYGH). In 1968, North York General Hospital opened on the corner of Leslie Street and Sheppard Avenue. Friends of North York General (later to become the North York General Hospital Foundation), the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire (IODE), a philanthropic organization for Canadian women, the Missionary Health Institute, and Volunteer Services were the four founding partners. The North Metropolitan Hospital Association was founded in 1960 by a group of neighbourhood residents to investigate the possibility of constructing a hospital to serve North York's expanding population. Plans for a 70-bed community hospital at the intersection of Leslie and Sheppard were developed, and money was obtained, under the direction of Colonel Clifford Sifton. Land on the Leslie site was acquired by November 1962. A total of 3,000 volunteers raised $3.2 million towards the new hospital's $8.6 million price tag. Premier John Robarts formally dedicated North York General Hospital on March 15, 1968.
