Profile (Overview)
More than 4.4 million people live in Alberta, as well as some citizens of Saskatchewan, British Columbia, and the Northwest Territories. Alberta Health Services (AHS) is delighted to be a member of Canada's first and biggest province-wide, integrated health system. Except for Covenant Health and other contracted service providers, AHS employs more than 112,300 people directly, and more than 13,000 people work for AHS' wholly-owned companies, including Alberta Precision Laboratories, Carewest, and CapitalCare Group. More than 11,000 physicians who practise in Alberta, 9,000 of them are members of the AHS medical staff, and around 9,100 volunteers also support AHS (including active, temporary and community appointments). Clinical education is provided at AHS facilities and public places to students from universities and colleges in Alberta as well as from universities and colleges outside of Alberta. In addition to having equity partnerships in 40 primary care networks, AHS includes 106 acute care hospitals, five independent psychiatric facilities, 8,523 acute care beds, 28,360 continuing care beds/spaces, and 3,077 addiction and mental health beds/spaces.
