Profile (Overview)

Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada's Grace Hospital is a community hospital. The 250-bed hospital is situated in St. James-Crestview Assiniboia's neighbourhood. The Salvation Army established the hospital on Ross Avenue as a refuge for mothers and children in 1890. It was the first Salvation Army hospital to be incorporated in Canada and was known at the time as The Salvation Army Grace General Hospital. When it was converted from a maternity hospital in 1927, the hospital became a true general hospital. Up until 1906, the hospital was situated on Ross Avenue. Thereafter, a new structure was built at Preston Avenue and Arlington Street. Many upgrades and additions would be made to the Arlington Street property. A structure in the St. James neighbourhood finally took the place of the Arlington Street facility; work on it started in 1964. In 1967, the St. James site was formally inaugurated.
