Profile (Overview)
About 3 kilometres (1.9 miles) east of the city centre, in the Jubilee neighbourhood, sits Victoria, British Columbia, Canada's Royal Jubilee Hospital, a 500-bed general hospital (itself named after the hospital). Its name honours Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1887. Up until 1983, when an upgraded Victoria General Hospital reopened in the neighbouring municipality of View Royal, Royal Jubilee—founded in 1890—served as Victoria's primary hospital. Critical care, surgery, diagnostics, emergency facilities, and other patient programmes are all provided by Royal Jubilee. It focuses especially on cardiac medicine. The hospital's expansion and renovation, which included rebuilding many structures and bringing the total number of beds to 500, were announced by the provincial government of British Columbia in 2007. The 500-bed new patient care centre (PCC) was inaugurated in early 2011.
