Profile (Overview)

The first and biggest hospital in Singapore is called Singapore General Hospital (SGH). It offers patients access to specialist care at reasonable costs, trains physicians and other healthcare workers, and conducts research to improve patient care. SGH is a not-for-profit organisation that is fully owned by the Singaporean government and serves as the system's flagship hospital. SGH is a part of the SingHealth network of medical facilities. Family physicians and specialists in both public and private practise recommend patients to SGH. Within one facility, the hospital offers a wide variety of medical services. On the SGH Campus, 5 National Specialist Centers are situated side by side, allowing for a multidisciplinary approach to treatment. SGH provides team-based care, which is delivered by clinicians, nurses, and allied health specialists The SGH Campus serves almost 1 million patients annually. With a workforce of 10,000, SGH is responsible for one-fifth of acute beds worldwide and nearly a quarter of all acute hospital beds in the public sector. The Joint Commission International has granted SGH accreditation for upholding its requirements for patient safety and healthcare quality. It is also the first nursing facility in Asia to get the American Nurses Credentialing Center's 2010 Magnet Recognition for Nursing Excellence.

In addition to receiving extensive training in shoulder, knee, sports, and arthroscopic surgery at the University of Washington in the United States, Professor Andrew Tan earned his orthopaedic surgery training in Singapore. He was one of the first few medical professionals in Singapore to receive the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh's Fellowship in Orthopaedics in 2002, certifying him as an orthopaedic specialist at that time. Since returning from the United States in 2003, he has been working as an orthopaedic surgeon at the Singapore General Hospital. The National Cancer Centre Singapore and Singapore General Hospital's Department of Hepatopancreatobiliary and Transplant Surgery are currently led by Professor Goh. Additionally, he serves as the Chairman of Robotic Surgery in the Division of Surgery at SingHealth Duke-NUS Transplant Centre and the Surgical Director of Liver Transplant. His clinical practise is focused on the therapy of difficult benign and malignant disorders (cancers) affecting the liver, pancreas, biliary tract, and gallbladder. He is a highly skilled and high-volume speciality HPB/transplant surgeon. After completing his surgical studies and earning his specialist surgeon certification with the Singapore Board in 2022, he has already carried out 1500 major HPB/transplant surgeries. He is the only surgeon in Singapore who has received certification in abdominal (liver, kidney, and pancreas) transplantation from both the Ministry of Health and the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS). He had previously spent two years performing multiple complicated surgical procedures as a surgical fellow at Rochester's famous Mayo Clinic. Due to his clinical and scientific work in the area, he is highly known as a global thought leader. Dr. Goh has won a number of honours and been invited to participate in many worldwide expert consensus committees. He has completed over 600 laparoscopic/robotic major HPB surgeries as the primary surgeon, making him one of Southeast Asia's most skilled surgeons for laparoscopic HPB/transplant surgery at the moment. He is well acknowledged as a leading authority on minimally invasive HPB surgery on a global scale. Under an Australian Government scholarship, Associate Professor John SP Yuen studied medicine at the University of Melbourne and earned a Bachelor of Medicine; Bachelor of Surgery (M.B; BS) degree in 1996. He is currently the head and senior consultant of the department of urology. He received advanced urology training in Singapore, where he also earned membership in the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2000 and a Master of Medicine (Surgery) from the National University of Singapore (NUS). In 2004, he was accepted as a Fellow of the Singapore Academy of Medicine and as a Member of the Urologist Chapter of the Singapore College of Surgeons.
