Profile (Overview)
With the arrival of Sister Mary Angela McBrien, Sister Mary Camillus Walsh, and Sister Mary Baptista Hennessy in 1949, Mount Alvernia Hospital's history officially began. Public hospitals at the time were overcrowded and understaffed. There could be more done, according to the Franciscan Missionaries of the Divine Motherhood (FMDM) sisters, to close the gap. Therefore, the FMDM Sisters created a core fund and solicited donations by pooling their savings and earnings. The request was answered by many kindhearted people and businesses, and soon enough money was raised to construct a new hospital. The hospital's 60 beds were officially made available on March 4, 1961. The hospital now has 304 beds and provides general acute care, as well as having two multidisciplinary medical specialist centres and tertiary medical capabilities. More than 1,200 accredited doctors support the hospital, and the campus is home to more than 200 specialists. Additional medical suites will be constructed as the facility expands, and more doctors are anticipated to join the staff.
