Montreal Heart Institute

Since 2009, Dr. Anita Asgar has been an interventional cardiologist at the Montreal Institute of Cardiology. Dr. Asgar, a native of Newfoundland, finished Memorial University's medical programme and internal medicine residency there (1995-2002). In 2002, she relocated to Dalhousie to continue her training in cardiology. She completed a two-year fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at the Institut de Cardiologie de Montréal before crossing the Atlantic to London, England, where she worked on fellowships in Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Structural and Congenital Intervention at the Royal Brompton Hospital. She was just recognised by the CRT in February 2010 as one of the Young Leaders in Interventional Cardiology. She also works full-time as a staff cardiologist at the Institut de Cardiologie de Montreal and serves as the clinic's director for transcatheter valve therapy. She performs multiple congenital interventions in addition to approximately 70 transcatheter aortic valve replacements each year as an active participant in the structural heart intervention programme. She is the top doctor in Canada for this treatment and just started the first transcatheter mitral valve leaflet repair programme in Quebec in December 2010. At the Montreal Heart Institute, Dr. Raoul Bonan has been an interventional cardiologist since 1978. He completed his studies in invasive cardiology at the Institute after earning his degree from the Université de Paris in 1974. (1972-1973). Afterwards, up until 1978, he continued his training in Montreal. The American College of Cardiology, the European Society of Cardiology, the American Heart Association, and the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions are all Fellow organisations that Dr. Bonan belongs to. Dr. Doucet began his career at the Montreal Heart Institute (MHI) as an interventional cardiologist in September 1992 after completing supplementary training at the Montreal Heart Institute (MHI) and the Clinique Pasteur in Toulouse, France. From 2002 to 2010, he directed the Interventional Cardiology Service. Yves Des Groseillers and Andre Berard Chair in Interventional Cardiology was established by him in 2009. Sherbrooke University awarded her a medical degree in 1989, and in 1994 she earned her cardiology specialty certification. She completed her complementary training from 1994 to 1997 at the Royal Bompton Hospital in London, England, spending a year in echography, a year in paediatric cardiology, and a year in adult congenital cardiology. She has been a member of the MHI since 1997, a clinical associate professor in the Université de Montréal's department of medicine since 2004, and the director of education since 2004. She helped the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Center grow and gain recognition in the clinic. Dr. Bouchard completed a surgical residency in valve repair at the famed Cleveland Clinic after studying medicine at McGill University and specialised in cardiac surgery at University de Montreal. He has performed surgery on more than 3000 patients since he began practising at the Montreal Heart Institute in 2000. He has specialised in heart failure surgery, minimally invasive thoracic surgery (thoracoscopy), valve repair, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy surgery over the years. Dr. Bouchard has been the programme director for cardiac surgery at University de Montréal since 2008. In 1995, Dr. Demers graduated with his medical degree from the Université of Montreal. In 2001, he completed his heart surgery residency programme at the University of Montreal. He finished a master's degree in biological sciences while he was completing his residency. The following year, Dr. Demers was awarded grants to finish a two-year fellowship at Stanford University under the direction of Dr. D. Craig Miller. During this time, he gained interest and expertise in the management and treatment of aortic disease, including aortic root reconstruction with valve preservation, aortic dissection surgery, valve repair surgery, and endovascular treatment of aortic disease (including aneurysms, dissections, bicuspid aortic valve disease, and Marfan's syndrome). He has authored more than 60 publications in peer-reviewed journals, more than 50 scientific abstracts, and 8 book chapters as a co-author. Since 2008, he has served as the education coordinator for the University of Montréal's cardiac surgery residency programme.
