Montreal Neurological Institute-Hospital | Montreal , Canada

Profile (Overview)

The cornerstone of the neuroscience mission of the McGill University Health Center is The Neuro (The Montreal Neurological Institute-Hospital), a multilingual research and teaching institution of McGill that offers top-notch patient care. A research and medical facility devoted to neurology, education, and clinical treatment, the Montreal Neurological Institute-Hospital (MNI), often known as Montreal Neuro or The Neuro, is situated in the heart of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It is located on the southern slope of Mount Royal along the east side of University Street, just north of Pine Avenue, and is a component of the network of McGill University Health Centres. Neurosurgeon Wilder Penfield established it in 1934 after creating the Montreal method there to treat epilepsy.

Dr. Edith Hamel

Dr. Edith Hamel

Quebec, Canada

Years of Experience

"Edith Hamel is a Canadian neuroscientist who focuses on the interactions between neurons, astrocytes, and microvessels that permit a normal blood supply to activated brain areas as well as the different neurological diseases that result from a system that is not functioning properly. Hamel works in a lab at the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital, a project of McGill University. There, she employs a variety of brain imaging methods to map changes in neuronal and hemodynamic responses under various physiological and pathological circumstances in order to identify the mediators of these responses." Dr. Guy A. Rouleau

Dr. Guy A. Rouleau

Quebec, Canada

Years of Experience

Guy Rouleau, MD, is the Director of The Neuro (Montreal Neurological Institute-Hospital), the Chair of the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery at McGill University, the Director of the Department of Neuroscience at the McGill University Health Centre, a co-founder of the Tanenbaum Open Science Institute, and a renowned James McGill Professor. Dr. Rouleau is a clinician-scientist who treats patients with genetic disorders of the brain and other diseases. He concentrates his research on figuring out the underlying causes of these problems in order to develop novel treatments. Throughout the course of his more than 30 years of actively conducting research, he has produced approximately 850 articles in peer-reviewed journals, which have been cited more than 74,000 times (Google Scholar). Identifying dozens of disease-causing genes and discovering novel mutational pathways are only a couple of Dr. Rouleau's ground-breaking accomplishments. His identification of the genes responsible for neurological and psychiatric conditions such as autism, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, hereditary neuropathies, epilepsy, and schizophrenia has improved our understanding of the molecular processes underlying the manifestation of these conditions' symptoms.
