St Michaels Hospital Toronto | Toronto , Canada

Profile (Overview)

A medical facility and teaching hospital, St. Michael's Hospital is located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It was founded in 1892 by the Sisters of St. Joseph with the primary objective of providing care for the ill and underprivileged residents of Toronto's inner city. The hospital offers tertiary and quaternary services in inner city health, neurosurgery, cardiovascular surgery, and therapeutic endoscopy. In Greater Toronto, along with the bigger Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, it is one of two Level 1 adult trauma centres. Both St. Michael's and Sunnybrook have helipads for use as trauma centres. It is one of many teaching hospitals affiliated with the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine and is a facility of the Unity Health Toronto hospital system. The hospital could accommodate 300 patients by 1912, and a five-room surgical suite was also erected. The original 26-bed institution was extended physically over time, most notably in the 1960s, to reach 900 beds. St. Michael's School of Nursing graduated 81 classes between 1892 and 1974, totaling 5,177 graduates. When nursing courses were transferred to the province's community college system in 1974, the institution was forced to close. After then, the hospital became the first in Canada to open a school for medical record librarians and took part in the training of nutritionists, X-ray technicians, and laboratory techs. The hospital changed its name to simply St. Michael's in March 2010 to reflect its expanding involvement in medical research.
