Anand Ghanekar, MD, PhD, FRCSC, received his training in general surgery at the University of Toronto, as well as in hepatobiliary surgery and abdominal organ transplantation (liver, kidney, pancreas, and intestine). He then attended the University of Wisconsin for laparoscopic donor nephrectomy training. Dr. Ghanekar has been given a position in the University Health Network and Hospital for Sick Children's general surgery departments. His clinical work focuses on the transplantation of abdominal organs from adults and children from both living and deceased donors. The involvement of stem cells in liver illnesses, such as hepatocellular carcinoma, is an active area of research for Dr. Ghanekar, an Affiliate Scientist at the Toronto General Research Institute. A multidisciplinary surgical team led by Dr. Robert James Cusimano, a cardiac surgeon, performs double bypass surgery with the assistance of anesthesiologists, radiologists, and a cardiac surgery fellow from Japan. His main area of study focus is the creation of minimally invasive heart surgery procedures. His research focuses on ways to improve collateral blood vessel creation in ischemic myocardium as well as heart failure. Gynecologic oncologist Dr. Sarah Ferguson works at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and teaches in the University of Toronto's Obstetrics and Gynecology Department. She earned her medical degree from Queen's University in 1997, and in 2002, she finished her residency programme in obstetrics and gynaecology at the University of Toronto. She subsequently went on to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center to complete a fellowship in gynecologic oncology. Dr. Ferguson is currently the Ontario Gynecologic Cancers Lead for Cancer Care Ontario and the Director of Research for the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at the University Health Network. At Toronto General Hospital, Dr. Alonso-Gonzalez currently oversees the Adult Congenital Heart Disease programme. From 2009 and 2011, he finished his ACHD fellowship at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London, UK, and his specialized cardiology training in Badajoz and Madrid, Spain. While serving as the Head of the Pulmonary Hypertension Unit in Badajoz, Spain, in 2011, he was selected as a staff cardiologist. He relocated in 2012 to the Royal Brompton Hospital in London, UK, where he now works as a consultant cardiologist for pulmonary hypertension and ACHD. Canadian physician, scholar, and cancer researcher Michael Allen Baker, CM OOnt. He is a professor of medicine at the University of Toronto, the Rose Family Chair in Medicine, and the former Physician-in-Chief of the University Health Network. His work has advanced knowledge of other cancers as well as human leukaemia. Baker, who was born in Toronto, Ontario, went to Oakwood Collegiate Institute before earning his M.D. in 1966 from the University of Toronto. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada with a focus in Hematology and Internal Medicine. He graduated from the National Board of Medical Examiners in 1967. He started working as a professor of medicine at the University of Toronto in 1982. He was appointed Physician-in-Chief of Toronto General Hospital in 1992. He was on the board of the Canadian Cancer Society for five years while serving three years as president of the National Cancer Institute of Canada. Joanne Bargman is a professor of medicine at the University of Toronto and a staff nephrologist at the University Health Network. She graduated from the University of Toronto with a medical degree. She spent her final year of medical school as an exchange fellow in Melbourne before attending Stanford University to complete her nephrology training. Her studies were concentrated on micropuncture and renal physiology. When she eventually made it back to Toronto, she was hired by the Toronto Western Hospital, where Dimitrios Oreopoulos educated her in peritoneal dialysis. On topics as varied as peritoneal dialysis, glomerulonephritis, and the therapy of systemic lupus erythematosus, she has given more than 700 invited lectures across the globe. View Profile
