Profile (Overview)

The Toronto General Hospital (TGH) is a significant teaching hospital and the main site of University Health Network in Toronto, Ontario, Canada (UHN). It is situated on University Avenue's Hospital Row in the Discovery District of Downtown Toronto, just to the north of The Hospital for Sick Children, across Gerrard Street West, and to the east of Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and Mount Sinai Hospital. The medical school at the University of Toronto uses the hospital as a teaching hospital. For the tenth year in a row, the hospital was named best for research in Canada by Research Infosource in 2019. The hospital also houses the main transplantation programme for Ontario, doing heart, lung, kidney, liver, pancreatic, and small intestine transplants among others for patients referred from across Canada. The emergency department presently sees 28,065 people annually. With 639 transplants carried out there in 2017, the hospital is North America's largest organ transplant facility. Cardiothoracic and cardiac surgery are additional well-known specialties at the hospital. In 1983 and 1986, TGH performed the first single and double lung transplants, and in 1992, Tirone David at Toronto General Hospital performed the first valve-sparing aortic root replacement. With 167 lung transplants carried out in 2017, the lung transplant programme is presently the biggest in the world. 2015 saw the world's first triple organ transplant (lung, liver, and pancreas) conducted at Toronto General Hospital on 19-year-old Reid Wylie. Through the Toronto General Research Institute, TGH also conducts research while instructing resident doctors, nurses, and technicians.

Hospital (Infrastructure)

The hospital is undergoing renovations. Three new image-guided operating rooms for difficult spinal and neurosurgery procedures will be among the twenty new operating rooms that will be added by the 15-story, 23,882-square-meter addition. Along with this, it will have a pharmacy, a medical device reprocessing department, a post-anesthetic care unit, and a pre-operative care unit.

He is a professor of medicine at the University of Toronto, the Rose Family Chair in Medicine, and the former Physician-in-Chief of the University Health Network. Baker, who was born in Toronto, Ontario, went to Oakwood Collegiate Institute before earning his M.D. in 1966 from the University of Toronto.
