Profile (Overview)

Sunnybrook has grown to become a fully affiliated teaching hospital of the University of Toronto from its humble beginnings as a hospital for Canadian veterans, adapting to serve the needs of our expanding neighbourhood. The largest trauma centre in Canada is located at Sunnybrook, which has grown to encompass three campuses and receives 1.3 million patient visits annually. The Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation's treaty area, as well as the ancestral and traditional grounds of the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, Ojibway/Chippewa, and Huron-Wendat Nations, are acknowledged by Sunnybrook. The world's approach to treating patients is altered by the ground-breaking research from Sunnybrook. In addition to hundreds of cardiac operations around North America, Dr. Cohen is also a world-renowned expert in the field of heart surgery research. He has published more than 50 studies in prestigious peer-reviewed journals and gives talks across North America as well as in Europe and Asia. Dr. Cohen is the Chief of Cardiac Surgery in the Division of Cardiac and Vascular Surgery at Sunnybrook Hospital's Schulich Heart Centre in addition to being a cardiologist at Cleveland Clinic Canada. Dr. Albert Yee is the head of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre (SHSC) and the Holland Bone and Joint Program Chief. Dr. Yee is an orthopaedic spine surgeon at SHSC, a Sunnybrook Research Institute associate scientist (Physical Sciences Platform), and a surgical oncology consultant at Odette Cancer Centre. He is a full professor in the Institute of Medical Sciences at the University of Toronto, with a joint appointment in the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering. He is the Division of Orthopaedics' Vice Chair of Research and Co-Director of the Department of Surgery Spine Program at the University of Toronto. Dr. Andrew Dueck

Dr. Dueck earned his medical degree from Queen's University in 1999 and then went on to complete his residency in General Surgery at the University of Toronto. During that time, he earned a Masters degree in clinical epidemiology from the University of Toronto, with a focus on aneurysm care in Ontario. He then went on to complete a Vascular Surgery Fellowship at the University of Toronto. Following that, he received additional training in minimally invasive and image-guided cardiovascular surgery at the Arizona Heart Institute. Dr. Dueck is the division head of vascular surgery and co-director of the vascular laboratory at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. He is a member of several committees, including the Schulich Heart Executive Committee and the Cardiac Care Network Working Group for vascular surgery in Ontario. He is an associate scientist at the Sunnybrook Research Institute, an Adjunct Scientist at the Li Ka Shing Knolwedge Institute, a member of several medical societies, and a former executive member of the Canadian Society for Vascular Surgery. Dr. Farhad Pirouzmand

Dr. Farhad Pirouzmand

In 1998, Dr. Pirouzmand finished his residency in the University of Toronto's neurosurgical training programme. After that, he finished a year-long fellowship in spinal trauma and peripheral nerve surgery as well as a year-long fellowship in skull base and reconstructive surgery. He worked as the programme director of neurosurgery at the University of Saskatchewan before joining the neurosurgical faculty at the University of Toronto in 2003. While there, he also finished a Masters in Epidemiology on the subject of skull topographic organisation. His main research interests are in orbital reconstructive surgery, spine, peripheral nerve, and skull base surgery. Dr. Jeffrey Fialkov

At Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, the division of plastic surgery is led by Dr. Jeffrey Fialkov. He is an Associate Professor in the University of Toronto's Division of Plastic Surgery and specialises in Craniomaxillofacial surgery. He earned both his medical degree from the University of Toronto in 1989 and his certification in plastic and reconstructive surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada in 1998. Dr. Fialkov received additional fellowship training with Dr. Ian Jackson at the Institute for Craniofacial and Reconstructive Surgery, Providence Hospital in Southfield, Michigan, after completing fellowship training in craniomaxillofacial and facial cosmetic surgery at Monash University and with Dr. Bryan Mendelsohn. Dr. Fialkov has worked actively in the Division of Plastic Surgery at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre since he was recruited to the University of Toronto Department of Surgery Faculty in 1999. The biggest integrated programme in Canada for musculoskeletal research, education, and care, the Holland Bone and Joint Research Program, includes Dr. Fialkov as an Associate Scientist.
