The cost of Cranioplasty in India ranges
from USD 6000 to USD 12000
Procedure Description:
Cranioplasty
A cranioplasty is a surgical procedure intended to correct cranial abnormalities resulting from prior trauma or surgeries, such as a decompressive craniectomy. It is done by using a variety of materials to fill up the damaged area, most commonly a synthetic substance or a fragment of the patient's bone.
Disease Overview:
Skull vault defect
A collection of uncommon congenital deformities known as cranial vault bone deficiencies include situations in which all or some of the cranial vault bones are lacking. The related nosological words for the extent of missing cranial vault bones are acalvaria, hypocalvaria, acrania, or hypocrania.
Disease Sign and Symptoms:
A frequent indication of most of these issues is inspiratory dyspnea accompanied by stertorous breathing or loud snoring sounds. The illness can manifest from birth, however it is typically initially noticed in the first few months of life.
Disease Causes:
Large calvarial defects and deformities are common after effects of these injuries. They can be caused by projectiles like bullets, flying splinters, or shrapnel penetrating the skull or by the cranial vault breaking under the force of an exploding shell, mine, or improvised explosive device.
Disease Diagnosis:
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) is used to confirm the diagnosis by displaying an underlying brain herniation and a bone defect. Depending on the child's age, treatment concepts may comprise duraplasty in addition to or instead of cranioplasty. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunting is occasionally necessary.
Disease Treatment:
In a decompressive craniectomy (DC), a significant portion of the skull is removed to provide room for the growing brain. Those who survive will typically need to have their skulls rebuilt later on, either with their own bone or an artificial prosthesis called a cranioplasty. In addition to restoring the integrity of the skull, cranioplasty can enhance brain function. The usual course of treatment after DC is to have a cranioplasty performed a few months later because, in the past, there was a worry that doing so too soon could raise the risk of infection. Recent systematic reviews, however, have refuted this and shown that an early cranioplasty—that is, one performed within three months of DC—may improve neurological recovery.
