At the University of Ottawa Heart Institute and The Ottawa Hospital, Dr. Kwan-Leung Chan practises cardiology. He holds a professorship at the Université of Ottawa's Department of Medicine. Dr. Chan graduated from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg with a BSc, MSc, and MD. He completed his internship at the Health Science Institute in Winnipeg before completing internal medicine residencies at the University of Ottawa and Toronto East General Hospital. He assumed the position of Head Resident in Cardiology at the Heart Institute in 1984 after serving as Chief Resident of Internal Medicine at the National Defence Medical Centre in Ottawa since 1982. In 1983 and 1984, respectively, he received his FRCPC (Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada) certifications in internal medicine and cardiology. Dr. Richard Davies is a professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa and the Division of Cardiology at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. Dr. Davies graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Psychology from Dalhousie University in Halifax in 1971. He then attended McGill University in Montreal for his MSc, PhD, MD, and CM degrees. He was elected a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology in 1987 and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC) in 1984. At the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, Dr. Peter Liu serves as vice president for research and chief scientific officer. In 2012, Dr. Liu started working at the Heart Institute as its Scientific Director. At Harvard Medical School and the University of Toronto, he earned his M.D. and finished his postgraduate training in internal medicine. Dr. Liu facilitated collaboration amongst researchers from diverse institutions while serving as the first Director of the Heart & Stroke/Richard Lewar Centre of Excellence at the University of Toronto. This increased the effect of publications. In his subsequent role as Scientific Director of the Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health at the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Dr. Liu fostered national and international research networks and launched national networks in imaging, clinical trials, and knowledge translation. The Ottawa region cardiovascular research strategy (ORACLE), created by Dr. Liu, is currently being put into action. The University of Ottawa Heart Institute's interventional cardiologist and clinician investigator is Dr. Juan Russo. He is also an assistant professor at the Université of Ottawa's Department of Medicine. 2011 saw Dr. Russo graduate from McMaster University with a medical degree. He finished his internal medicine and adult cardiology residencies at the University of Toronto and the Université of Ottawa Heart Institute, respectively. At the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, he completed his fellowship training in interventional cardiology, and at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center, he completed specialist training in complex, higher-risk procedures and advanced hemodynamic care. 2019 saw Dr. Russo join the Université of Ottawa Heart Institute's Division of Cardiology. David Glineur, MD, PhD, is an assistant professor in the University of Ottawa's Department of Surgery and a cardiac surgeon at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. In 1998, Dr. Glineur graduated with honours in medicine from the Université Catholique de Louvain in Brussels, Belgium. He received advanced laparoscopic training at the University of Lille in France during his surgical residency. In 2004, he earned board certification in general surgery. He completed a three-month mini-fellowship in off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery while a fellow in cardiac surgery. Dr. Glineur began the robotic mitral valve programme at Clinique Saint-Luc Bouge in Namur, Belgium, in December 2011 following intensive training in robotic cardiac surgery in the United States with a focus on mitral valve replacement. At the Université of Ottawa Heart Institute, Dr. Munir Boodhwani teaches as an Associate Professor in the Division of Cardiac Surgery. Prior to this, he was the Residency Training Program's Program Director. Aortic valve repair, open and endovascular treatment of severe thoracic aorta pathologies, transcatheter valve therapies, mechanical circulatory support, and heart transplantation are among the clinical interests of Dr. Boodhwani. Dr. Talal Al-Atassi is an assistant professor at the University of Ottawa as well as a surgeon in the Division of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. He is presently the Residency Training Program's Program Director. Harvard University awarded Dr. Al-Atassi a master's degree in public health along with his medical degree from McGill University. He finished his surgical residency at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, where he served as chief resident. He then underwent fellowships at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles for his thoracic aortic and endovascular work and Emory University in Atlanta for his interventional structural heart and minimally invasive heart surgery. Dr. Al-Atassi is the first surgeon from Canada to receive formal training in cutting-edge transcatheter methods at prestigious facilities in the US during his fellowship. The Heart Institute, the University of Ottawa, the Ottawa Hospital, and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, among others, have all given Dr. Al-Atassi accolades for his clinical and research work.
