Profile (Overview)

The National University Hospital (NUH) is a significant tertiary and referral facility and Singapore's first university hospital. Although NUH began operations on June 24, 1985, its history dates back to the establishment of the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine in 1905. It serves as the primary teaching hospital for both the NUS Faculty of Dentistry and the medical school. An academic medical centre that is a part of Singapore's National University Health System, NUH offers patients access to inexpensive specialist treatment, educates medical staff, and conducts bench-to-bedside research to enhance patient care. It is Singapore's sole public, nonprofit hospital that provides a full range of specialised care for adults, women, and children, as well as paediatric kidney and liver transplants.

A/Prof Kow finished his advanced surgical training at Tan Tock Seng Hospital after earning his Master of Medicine (Surgery), Master of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and Master of the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland diplomas in 2005. He earned his Fellowship in General Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in Hong Kong in 2009. In the same year, the Ministry of Health in Singapore awarded him Specialist accreditation in general surgery. Senior Consultant and the first Head of Thoracic Surgery at Singapore's National University Heart Centre is Associate Professor John Tam (NUHCS). At the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore (NUS), he holds the position of Associate Professor with tenure. He completed a sports surgery fellowship in Louisville, USA, with funding from the Singapore Ministry of Health, where he assisted in the surgical treatment and recovery of top NCAA College players. A fellowship in lower limb surgery focused on joint preservation and lower limb reconstructions was completed after that in Heidelberg, Germany. Currently serving as the Clinical Director of the Heart Failure Program at NUHCS, Dr. Lin Weiqin is a Consultant with the Department of Cardiology at the National University Heart Centre of Singapore (NUHCS). 2008 saw Dr. Lin graduate from the National University of Singapore with a degree in medicine and surgery. In 2011, he received the Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine from the National University of Singapore and membership in the Royal College of Physicians (United Kingdom) after completing his basic specialist training in internal medicine. The National University Heart Centre in Singapore is where he finished his cardiology studies before being hired as a staff cardiologist in 2015. When he received the Healthcare Manpower Development Plan (HMDP) in 2017, he began a year-long fellowship in advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, United States. During the fellowship, he received training in the management of acute heart failure with short-term mechanical circulatory support, as well as the care of advanced heart failure patients with implanted durable left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) or heart transplants. Cardiomyopathies (including hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, cardiac amyloidosis, and cardiac sarcoidosis) and echocardiography are among Dr. Lin's other specialist interests in addition to heart failure. Vathsala went on to study medicine at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee. She got training in transplantation at the Cornell University School of Medicine in the United States and training in renal medicine at the Singapore General Hospital after being awarded a Health Manpower Development Program scholarship. Prof. Vathsala has spent her entire professional life working to advance clinical renal transplantation since completing her transplant training. She has been an ardent supporter of kidney transplantation as the preferred treatment for individuals with renal failure and a fierce opponent of the commercialization of organ donation. She oversaw the management of the first pancreas kidney transplant at NUH and Singapore in 2012, as well as the first spousal kidney transplant in 1991, cross-match positive deceased donor kidney transplants since 2007, and the rare blood group incompatible and cross-match positive kidney transplant performed at NUH in 2009.
